Sight reading rhythms is the same as reading a book. You read slightly ahead, you read in groups (many times recognizing prepasitional phrases...groups of words) and because you are use to a standardization of a language, it frees your mind to envision the picture the story is painting.
The same in music. Many times you can be mathematically correct when writing a rhythm, but if you don't group it in a more common way, now the player has to switch from recognition to sub-divided reading.
